LGBTQ+ Pride Month culminates with parades in NYC, San Francisco and beyond

NEW YORK (AP) — The monthlong celebration of LGBTQ+ Pride has reached its exuberant grand finale as multitudes of rainbow-laden revelers hit the streets for marquee parades in New York, Chicago, San Francisco and elsewhere across the globe. Sunday's wide-ranging festivities functioned both as jubilant parties and political protests. This year, tensions over the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza have colored the celebrations, exposing divisions within the community that is normally aligned on social issues. Protesters temporarily blocked a Pride parade in New York, chanting: “Free, free, free Palestine.” Pro-Gaza activists have already disrupted several pride events held in June.

With England survival at stake, Jude Bellingham creates one of the great moments of Euro 2024

GELSENKIRCHEN, Germany (AP) — England has advanced to the quarterfinals of the European Championship after Jude Bellingham scored a stunning overhead kick in the fifth minute of stoppage time to spark a 2-1 comeback win after extra time against Slovakia. Bellingham’s overhead kick leveled the round-of-16 game at 1-1 with seconds remaining at the Veltins Arena. Harry Kane headed in the winner in the first minute of extra time as England avoided one of the biggest shocks in the history of the Euros. Ivan Schranz scored in the first half for Slovakia and his goal looked like being enough to eliminate England, which was one of the pre-tournament favorites and runner-up at the last Euros. England will play Switzerland in the quarterfinals.

‘A Quiet Place’ prequel box office speaks volumes as Costner’s Western gets a bumpy start

“A Quiet Place: Day One” is making noise at the box office. The prequel earned an estimated $53 million in its first weekend in North American theaters, according to studio estimates Sunday. The same could not be said for Kevin Costner’s self-financed “Horizon: An American Saga—Chapter 1,” which debuted with only $11 million. “Day One” also missed out on No. 1 by a hair. That title again went to Disney and Pixar’s juggernaut “Inside Out 2,” which made an estimated $57.4 million in its third weekend in theaters. The 2024 box office is still down 19%.

WELLFLEET, Mass. (AP) — Animal rescuers were trying to keep dozens of dolphins away from shallow waters around Cape Cod after 125 of the creatures earlier stranded themselves. Teams in Massachusetts found one group of 10 Atlantic white-sided dolphins swimming in a dangerously shallow area at dawn on Saturday, and managed to herd them out into deeper water. That is according to the International Fund for Animal Welfare. Scouts also found a second group of 25 dolphins swimming close to the shore near Eastham, with herding efforts there ongoing as the tide dropped throughout the morning. Ten dolphins died during the stranding Friday at The Gut — or Great Island — in Wellfleet, at the Herring River.
