Darrel was baptized and then confirmed on May 31, 1952, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Bertrand, Nebraska. He was raised on the family farm east of Smithfield, Nebraska, where he and his younger brother, Wayne, created many fond memories. Darrel received his primary education from Smithfield Public Schools through the eighth grade and then attended Bertrand High School, graduating with the class of 1957.He enjoyed football and was a member of the football team that suffered only one loss his Junior and Senior years. After graduation, Darrel worked on the family farm.

On July 28, 1962, he was united in marriage to Faye Johnston at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church and to this union, they were blessed with three sons: Darren, Brian and Jason. The family made their home in Cozad, Nebraska, where Darrel was employed by Monroe Auto Equipment Company. Darrel enjoyed visiting with friends and attending family gatherings. As a devoted Christian, his faith and his family were always in the forefront of his life. He enjoyed devotions and Sunday church services, but most of all, Darrel loved to attend his grandchildren’s activities. When his sons were growing up, he enjoyed baseball, football, and basketball; practicing in the yard and garage. A highlight was a trip to Kansas City for Brian’s punt, pass and kick competition.

He was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Bertrand, then Trinity Lutheran Church in Lexington. In October of 1966, he transferred his membership to Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church, where he faithfully attended and served until his passing.
