Rear Admiral John “Jay” Vann assumed duties as Commander, Coast Guard Cyber Command located in Washington, DC. in May 2022. He is responsible for conducting full-spectrum cyberspace operations in support of Coast Guard, Department of Homeland Security, and Department of Defense mission objectives.

Rear Admiral Vann recently completed an assignment as Deputy Commander, U.S. Coast Guard Personnel Service Center, where he oversaw execution of the Coast Guard’s human resource policies by recruiting, assigning, and managing nearly 45,000 members of the active duty and reserve workforces. Prior to that, in June 2021, he completed a Military Fellowship at the Council on Foreign Relations.

Rear Admiral Vann previously served as Assistant Superintendent of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, and Commanding Officer of the Coast Guard’s largest training center in Yorktown, Virginia. A career operations afloat officer, he commanded Coast Guard cutters HARRIET LANE and ASSATEAGUE, and served onboard cutters ACTIVE, GALLATIN, and FORWARD.

His assignments ashore have included duty as both Future Operations and Cutter Forces Chief at Coast Guard Atlantic Area, as Support and Special Staff Assignments Officer in the Officer Assignments Branch of the Coast Guard Personnel Service Center, and as the Coast Guard’s first e-Learning Program Manager on the Commandant’s Training, Workforce Performance and Development staff.

Rear Admiral Vann is a 1992 graduate of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering. He holds a Master of Science degree in Instructional Systems from Florida State University and a Master’s Degree in Strategic Studies from the U.S. Air Force’s Air War College. Rear Admiral Vann graduated from the Harvard University Graduate School of Education’s Institute for Educational Management, and the Stanford University Graduate School of Business Executive Leadership Development Program.

Rear Admiral Vann’s military decorations include two Coast Guard Legions of Merit, four Coast Guard Meritorious Service Medals, five Coast Guard Commendation Medals, and the permanent Cutterman’s Pin. He was awarded the 2015 Secretary of Homeland Security’s Gold Medal for Exceptional and Distinguished Service, and was designated an Honorary Chief Petty Officer in 2018. Rear Admiral Vann and his wife Darlene are the proud parents of daughters LT Hailey Murray, MC, USN, and Madison Jezuit, Coast Guard spouse.

Command Master Chief, Master Chief Michael A. Brewer

U.S. Coast Guard Cyber Command (2)Master Chief Michael A. Brewer assumed the duties as the Command Master Chief for Coast Guard Cyber Command on May 26, 2022. As the Command Senior Enlisted Leader, he serves as the principal advisor to the CGCYBER Commander on all workforce matters and policies across all Cyber related missions. Prior to his current assignment as the CGCYBER CMC, Master Chief served in Coast Guard Headquarters as the Marine Science Technician Rating Force Master Chief.

Additional assignments include his first tour of duty aboard Coast Guard Cutter Rush in Honolulu, HI; Marine Science Technician “A” School in Yorktown, VA; Marine Safety Office San Francisco Bay, CA; Port Security Unit Detachment, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba; Sector San Francisco, CA; Training Center Yorktown, VA; Sector Boston, MA; PACAREA Incident Management and Sector Boston, MA as the Silver Badge Command Master Chief. In addition to these assignments, Master Chief Brewer has deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom as well as numerous natural disasters and major oil spills to include Deepwater Horizon and Hurricane Katrina.

Master Chief Brewer is a graduate of the National Defense University Keystone Command Senior Enlisted Leader Course Class 23-2, Coast Guard Senior Enlisted Leadership Course Class 03-12, the Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Academy Class CLXV, Air Force Non-Commissioned Officer Academy, CG Leadership and Management School, and other service-related schools.

CMC Brewer’s personal awards include the Coast Guard Meritorious Service Medal, Three Coast Guard Commendation Medals, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Three Coast Guard Achievement Medals, Two Coast Guard Letter of Commendation Ribbons, and numerous other personal and service awards. He has earned the Marine Safety Insignia as well as Rating Force Master Chief (Blue Badge), Command Master Chief (Silver Badge) and Command Master Chief (Gold Badge). Master Chief Brewer was also awarded as Sector San Francisco Enlisted Person of the Year for 2005.

CMC Brewer was born in Atlanta, GA and grew up in Houston, TX where he ultimately enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard on 17 August 1999. He has been married to his wife Kelly-Lynn since 2005 and they are blessed with their three children, Emma, Keegan and Hanna.
